From acclaimed director Alexander Payne, THE HOLDOVERS follows a curmudgeonly instructor (Paul Giamatti) at a New England prep school who is forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go. Eventually he forms an unlikely bond with one of them -- a damaged, brainy troublemaker (newcomer Dominic Sessa) -- and with the school's head cook, who has just lost a son in Vietnam (Da'Vine Joy Randolph).
This film was a Runner Up for the People's Choice at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival.
"Their misery is our gain as filmmaker Alexander Payne reunites with his Sideways star Giamatti for another comedy of thwarted lives that perfectly evokes the 1970s in look, sound and cinematic satisfaction; there’s a fully developed story told here." - Toronto Star
"The Holdovers is ultimately a story about the absence of family, and as it watches three individuals come together and apart, it’s subtly attuned to the way that class constricts people’s lives." - Slant Magazine
