Doors Open Hamilton

Doors Open Hamilton

Built in 1914 as a vaudeville and movie theatre, this distinctive beaux-arts building was designed by Stewart & Witton. After 76 years of continuous operation, the theatre closed in August 1990. But, in 2018, it reopened as an independent art-house cinema. Original architectural features — including lavish interiors — have been beautifully restored, and a new neon sign recreates the long-lost original.

The Playhouse will be open to tours from 10am to 1pm.

Janes Walk Hamilon has partnered with the Playhouse to offer complementary screenings of the 1966 National Film Board film Steeltown. The film will begin at the top of every hour during Doors Open.

Steeltown (55 minutes, Directed by Rex Tasker & Wolf Koenig, NFB, 1966) A portrait of Hamilton, the Pittsburgh or Birmingham of Canada. This is a rich and colourful subject that encourages imaginative treatment on the screen. The heart of the city is the immense complex of furnaces and rolling mills, but nearby are the lake, the mountain, and the rich fruit farms. How the work of the steel mills touches the city and its surroundings is shown in many views during both day and night.
