Trumbo

Golden Globe nominated! "Trumbo reminds us of a very dark time in America as well as Hollywood. Important but also hugely entertaining. Bryan Cranston nails it." - Deadline Hollywood

“Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) does sterling work in 'Trumbo' as an eloquent screenwriter who bucked the Hollywood blacklist and triumphed. Catnip for fans of old Hollywood, this highly entertaining biopic focuses on so-called 'swimming pool Communist' Dalton Trumbo, who was once Tinseltown’s highest-paid writer. He was the most prominent and outspoken of the political activists who became targets when America’s World War II alliance with the Soviet Union turned into a Cold War in the late 1940s.

“Trumbo’s mocking of the House Un-American Activities Committee, in front of which he was called to testify, that led to the group known as the 'Hollywood Ten' drawing jail time after being convicted of contempt of Congress. Some blacklisted writers, directors and actors worked overseas, but Trumbo employed false names, and in some cases 'fronts' who took screen credit, to keep constantly working to support his family (with one of the fronts 'winning' a Best Original Screenplay Oscar for the Trumbo-written 'Roman Holiday').

“Everybody knew it was really Trumbo’s work, and this led to a couple of big-budget assignments: Stanley Kubrick’s 'Spartacus' and Otto Preminger’s 'Exodus.' When publicity-conscious independent producer Preminger announces he’s going to buck the blacklist by crediting Trumbo, 'Spartacus' star/producer Kirk Douglas follows suit in defiance of Universal Pictures. And the blacklist is finally shameful history.

“It’s a cracking good story, and Cranston does a great job portraying a man who made great sacrifices for his principles — and the effect it had on his family. Comedian Louis C.K. does well as a composite character who basically stands in for the other nine members of the Hollywood Ten, by playing a blacklisted screenwriter who ends up dying of lung cancer after questioning Trumbo’s tactics.

“'Trumbo' may not have the gravitas of previous blacklist films, but in some ways it’s the most satisfying of them all.” - NY Post

if you love Hollywood and Hollywood history, you must see 'Trumbo'... a fascinating piece of Americana" - Boston Herald
