Here to Stay: The Story of FC Lampedusa St. Pauli

Film and Panel Discussion on Refugees and Sport

"What every living creature needs is food and protection. But since we are humans and not animals we also need to be part of society in some way."

So states the coaches of FC Lampedusa. A team of refugees sponsored by the Bundesliga club FC St. Pauli. Grand River Union was able to watch FC St. Pauli and meet many of the North American supporters of the club during a friendly match between Detroit City FC and St. Pauli last year and heard about this short film on the relationship between the club and their sponsored club FC Lampedusa.

FC Lampedusa is made up of refugees that live in the city of Hamburg. FC St. Pauli fans saw a need to support these refugees as they looked for a new home and provided a platform for them to play and work.

After showing the film there will be a panel discussion on local refugee experiences and the power of sport in building community.

Cost: $10. All proceeds will go to local refugee charity. Tickets at the door.

Mark Palmer - a founder of FC St. Pauli Toronto Fans, an official supporters club for FC St. Pauli, non established in 2016.
