REAR WINDOW

Dir. Alfred Hitchcock • USA, 1954 • 112 min. • Rated PG

"Set in a Greenwich Village apartment and its adjoining courtyards, Alfred Hitchcock’s urban backyard-murder story is a light satire of modern city life and a thorough exploration of the allure (and risks) of voyeurism. Rear Window revolves around a photojournalist (James Stewart) who’s laid up in a wheelchair with injuries. As a distraction from the pain, the summer heat, and his troubled romance with a gorgeous fashion plate (Grace Kelly), he takes to looking out the window and immersing himself in his neighbours’ lives, using his long-lens camera as a telescope. Eventually, he, his lover, and his peppery nurse (Thelma Ritter) stumble upon what they think is a murder committed by a man across the way (Raymond Burr).

"This is Hitchcock’s most involving experience in audience participation: we perceive the apartment windows as game squares, and we’re made to think that by taking in as many fractured scenes as possible we can solve a murder and win the game. But this isn’t a game. Hitchcock’s entire movie tests the limits of empirical evidence." – Michael Sragow, The New Yorker
